Called to Follow

"For many Irish Christians, the command of God to Abraham in the Book of Genesis to leave his own
place and set out for the land that God would give him and his descendents (Gen 12:1), was a command
they too were called to follow. Some went in search of a more solitarily life, others left to evangelise peoples
who had not yet heard the Christian Gospel and some seem be searching for a promised land. It is hard to
underestimate this important motif of pilgrimage for these early missionaries. It is Columbanus (AD615) who perhaps most epitomised this figure of who perhaps most epitomised this figure of a missionary monk, part of the great movement of peregrini. Looking to the example of Patrick, they sought the salvation of many and a solitary spot of their own."
